Traditional children’s games in a North Russian village: a study of dialect vocabulary

The report is based on the data collected during expeditions of 2011-2013 to a North Russian village Tavren’ga (Arkhangelsk region) and considers traditional children’s games once popular with villagers. These games are rarely played nowadays and many of them survive only in the unwritten memories of dialect speakers. The report is mainly devoted to the study of specific dialect words denoting such games (e.g. zakolotovka, ukoronka, piman-iman, zhuravki, sloboda, grehi, lyapki, etc.), as well as various objects used in the games, special actions and roles (such as storozhevoy, kashevar, zakolotit’, varit’ kashu, etc.). The rules of the games are also explained.
